Ex-sonics Star Shawn Kemp Arrested In Connection With Driving Shooting

The news has reported that former Seattle Sonics basketball player Shawn Kemp was taken into custody on Wednesday in Pierce County in connection with a shooting incident in Tacoma. Pierce County Corrections confirmed that Kemp was booked just before 6 p.m.

According to the Tacoma Police Department, an altercation occurred between the occupants of two cars in a parking lot on the 4500 block of South Steele Street, which resulted in shots being fired shortly before 2 p.m. 

After the incident, one of the drivers left the scene, while former Seattle Sonics player Shawn Kemp was arrested by the police, who also found a gun in his possession. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Although the Tacoma Police Department did not confirm whether the person arrested in connection with the shooting incident was Shawn Travis Kemp, the former NBA player, they did not respond to multiple inquiries seeking clarification. Kemp played a significant role in the successful era of the Seattle Sonics basketball team in the 1990s.

Making his debut in the NBA during the 1989-90 season, Shawn Kemp was a 20-year-old player who had never played college basketball. However, he quickly gained recognition for his athleticism and impressive dunking abilities. 

During his career, Kemp participated in six NBA All-Star Games and, alongside point guard Gary Payton, formed one of the league's most formidable duos. The duo played a key role in leading the Seattle Sonics to the NBA Finals in 1996, where they ultimately lost to the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls.

Due to his unhappiness with his contract situation, Kemp decided to force a trade out of Seattle following the 1996-97 season. As part of the trade deal, the Sonics received forward Vin Baker as the main return, while Kemp joined the Cleveland Cavaliers where he continued to excel for three more seasons. 

However, Kemp's career trajectory began to decline after being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in 2000. He played three more seasons for the team, but his performance experienced a significant drop during this time.
